In general, it's an ok movie that had some good ideas worked in to it, but some of it didn't make a lot of sense. Bane, the main villain for most of the movie, is pretty unknown and I think that's the reason they picked him as a character. The whole plot of "return Gotham to the citizens despite the city's inevitable doom" seemed a much more fitting theme for The Joker with his whole "some men just want to watch the world burn" persona. Bane's actions didn't have any hint of motivation until the big reveal at the end, and even then it seemed kind of tacked on. It felt very much like they planned to have The Joker as the main bad guy, Ledger's death made them rewrite the script, but they liked the story so much they only changed the guy who carries out the plans and a fairly feeble reason for him to do so. They did do a good job with Bane's origin story, which was pretty cool, but didn't really fit properly.
I liked catwoman (or at least, woman-very-heavily-implied-to-be-but-not-actually-named-as-catwoman) mostly because of the subtlety surrounding her character. I liked how in most scenes she's wearing something (usually a type of goggles, I believe) on her head that makes it look like she has cat ears.
The big reveal at the end is totally out of the blue and I swear the minute that girl revealed herself as Ra's al Ghul's daughter, she got at least 40% more Asian. I didn't even remember her having an accent before that. Why was she even still pretending to be one of the good guys long after Bane took control? It only serves as a way to explain the fact Bane knew about the fusion reactor since it was supposedly her plan all along to get that thing built. Still no real explanation why the league of shadows hates Gotham so much, which bugged me a bit.
And the grand finale where Batman "dies" would have been a great point to end the movie. A sad, but heroic ending to both the movie and the series.
Instead, he's still alive, in a relationship with catwoman and the young police inspector becomes Robin for no apparent reason. They could have implied that he was going to be the new batman (which wasn't really that necessary in the first place) just by walking in to that cave, there was no reason to actually change his name to Robin. I fear they're trying to keep their options open for another sequel.
A lot of things bugged me, and I think they could have done a better job explaining and giving the bad guys an actual purpose. It's not terrible, but nowhere near the level of The Dark Knight.
