Katls

This thread is Mod approved and rule(s) has been added since the thread's creation. Please take the time to read through the below guidelines before posting.

--> NO creationism/evolution debates, or any religious debates that result in people's ideas being shot down or deemed ridiculous/massive fighting to occur. This thread is not for debate, it is for discussion. Fighting and flaming will not be tolerated in this thread.

For now I will allow religious discussion to occur if it ties into something scientific, but if any problems constantly arise I will be forced to ban religion from this thread.

--> If you are going to post an image, make sure it follows the same rules that all other threads follow by. Any 'gruesome' pictures must be in spoil tags with a warning and it must have something to do with science. NO gore. (IE - No pictures of an animal that has been run over several times. I don't care if it relates to your topic, I will delete your post so hard, a hole will be left where it once stood).

I will allow pictures that show nudity until it is said otherwise be me or another authority figure here, but they must have something to do with science, and they must be in spoiler tags with a warning. NO PORN. Sorry guys.

I will also not tolerate any pictures of anything overly sickening. Any pictures of diseases or squeamish images MUST BE SPOILED WITH A CLEAR WARNING. Anyone who fails to spoil their image which shows a disturbing or horrifying picture will get a warning or suspended for a day or more depending on the circumstances. Seriously, this Mew doesn't want to see that.

If you are unsure if you should post your image, please ask Gorgro or Jonny over PM.
Edit - Dewman has offered to view images as well.

Please and thank you!

-Rare

This is Katls, and I would also request that you also follow the following rules as well:
1. If you post a report/concept/demonstartion of some form, please cite where you got the information(please, no Wikipeadia).
2. Always come here with an open mind, but this thread is open to minor disscussion as well, but make sure that during any discussion that involes anything out of common knowlage, please cite a source.
That's all for now, thank you.

This is a thread for general science discussion, silly or serious, real or sci-fi, random facts to long reports/presintations.
Knowing MY luck, this won't get a single post on it.
I'd like to open up with my consept for a simple plasma gun.
First, I need to explain exactly what plasma is. Plasma is simply ionized gas, and it is commonly misused in sci-fi(just like novas and supernovas, it's like an unwritten rule). It wouldn't actually be in a ball or a beam without it going as super-fast speeds(in which it's likely to disapate), but I also must point out that it still has it's use as a weapon. Infact, we already use it in militay weaponry, but most people know that it actally uses plasma, the flamethrower. Fire is a form of plasma and is increadbly dence, that's why it doesn't drift off into the sky like helium and carbon dioxide. But one of the real defineing characteristics of plasma is it's ability to conduct electisity and be affected my magnetic feilds, and are often hot.

Now onto the gun. The ammo cartage is lined with elcecto-magints and a small air-tight metal slider leading to the barrel with electromagets on it as well to keep the plasma in the cartage. The plasma must be hot or eletcfied for this to work btw, or else we wouldn't need the magnetic feild to keep the plasma off the inner walls of the cartage. The barrel needs to have strong electromagnets as well lineing the inside of it to force out the plasma(they need to be at a particular angle and the barrel, I'm still working on that to keep it from backfiring). When you pull the trigger, the elctromagnets in the forward part of the ammo cartage lower the force they exert(can't turn them off complely, it can't touch the inner walls, damage to the weapon or the user it likely if this happens) and the ones in the back up the aintie to send it though the now open slide. The electomagents in the barrel launch the plasma out, and you have something akin to a flamethrower that could also have electric properties.
That's all for now, I might make some sceaches later and post them(for whoever cares)!

neat katls

did you know that scientists are researching on using spider silk to rebuild nerves in humans? mostly as a matrix for stem cells to attach too.
it makes sense, spider silk is somewhat antiseptic and its also quite strong.
how do you like that? spider silk in your nerve cells?

They are also making musle replacements too with spider silk! In the tests it made the subject somewhere between 300-500% stronger.
That would make me...

At least 20% cooler.

I added in some rules on Katls's original post, (I hate to be a downer, but I really want to avoid seeing anything I will need bleach to forget) so let me know if I should add or alter any rules stated.

Have you been practicing your typing, Katls, or is someone proofreading your posts? You're getting much better.

On the topic at hand, SCIENCE FOR THE SCIENCE GOD! It's no surprise plasma has been used in weapons. Blood carries another form of plasma, but the two are vastly different. Plasma is really just ionized gasses. I'm not sure how effective one would be at creating their own Plasma Gun, however. The best example of one I can think of are the guns that shoot Plasma so that hard metals can be cut cleanly.

Okay, science. In 5 billion years the Sun will run out of fuel and turn into a Red Giant. Also, the deepest ocean part in the world is the Mariana trench Pacific which is 35,000+ feet. Imagine what's lurking in there.

Edit - And finally, feel insignificant and alone in a large, cruel universe;

my first comment must of course be:

considering the plasma weapon, I think it would be fun to walk around on a battlefield wielding an oversized plasma cutter, in conjunction with an longer ranged weapon, of course

and the spider silk thing, could be interesting, but I don't think it will work well with the immune system

I'd like to add that fire isn't a plasma, it doesn't have the heat and/or the energy to kick electrons out of molecules (which is what ionisation means). Fire is also in no way conductive.

Secondly, there are many different types of plasma, not all of them superheated. (Look up "plasma lamp", you'll most likely have seen one before). This is just a random fact, since this kind would make a fairly poor weapon.

Also, Rare has the right idea for a plasma weapon. Plasma cutters shoot out compressed air (or other gas) through a high voltage spark. As far as I know they work by creating the spark between the cutting surface and the cutter, rather than with the cutter itself, probably for safety purposes. I don't know what your range would be with one of these though, but they might be more akin to a flamethrower in any case. (Flamethrowers shoot gasoline through a flame, these things effectively shoot air through electricity.)

On the subject of crazy sci-fi weapons and such, Michio Kaku did a show on Discovery about things like that (including lightsabers!) called Sci-fi Science, check it out if you can find it somewhere.

Secondly, there are many different types of plasma, not all of them superheated
Firstly, I'm going by my science teacher and textbook about fire being a plasma, so if I'm wrong about this, I'd like to thank the Seirra Sands Unified School District for so. I'm not trying to make an arugument here, just simply stateing.
Secondly, I'd lkie you to look at my statement again that your refering to.
I wrote:and are often hot.
Once again, not trying to aruge, but make sure you read something a few times over before commenting on something that the meaning could be changed by a few words.
Though I will say that I messed up with origonal concept for the plasma gun, and I'll have to revise it later after I'm done with schoolwork.
Also, I added two new rules up in the first comment below the mod rules.

in some places they use spider silk to make bandages, some types of silk are antiseptic. the research on this is far enough that they know they can put spider silk in the body without any downsides

I wasn't trying to attack your statements, I was just adding to the discussion with whatever sciency knowledge I have about plasmas. This included my attempt at correction, since that's what I learned, and plasma lamps, because they're awesome.

I would be happy to accept any scientific corrections to the stuff I say. Finding out you're wrong is usually what science is all about. In that light, I've done some research and I've found that I was sort of wrong as well. Flames can contain plasma, but not all of them do.
