I dunno... I could see how jumping off a building or something is disturbing the peace and causing property damage. I don't recommend suicide by any means, of course. []

How about we grab a noose and jump of a building, not only dying, but repeatedly smacking against the side of a building above a 5 year olds birthday party?

Depending on the speed of impact and the hardness of the victim's skull, i'm still not sure if there will be any noteworthy property damage. Maybe if he/she were to hit a window or car? There are too many variables!

Also, suicide is illegal because it is mostly caused by mental illness.
Clinical depression is a mental illness, and a cause of suicide.
It is legal to stop people suffering from mental illness to harm themselves.
It would be cruel not to.
Also, emo faux-depressed kids with millimetre deep scars on their arms, a mockery of depression and the delicate thing that is the human psyche, all of them, in jail for this.
Win?

I can't imagine suicidal people being deterred by someone saying "Hey, don't jump off that building, you'll get in trouble!"
Once you've decided to take your own life, you're past the point where you care about getting fined. (also, wouldn't an arrest and possible convictions only add to the problems?)

i think we can all agree that mimes are more evil than clowns. they are also tougher to kill. all they have to do is pretend to have a fire hose while you are spraying them with a flamethrower and then they do not get killed by fire!

Yes it's a real law, or use to be a real law - I remember hearing about it in school - but they usually go after the remaining families of the suicidal person. They use to take items or money from the families of the person who committed suicide.

Answer;
How can suicide be illegal, given that the perp can't be punished? Nonetheless it has been, and until quite recently in some places (Ireland repealed its law in 1993). This seems absurd, but as with many of our more curious laws, we only see it that way now thanks to evolving ideas of morality.

I don't see why it should be illegal to commit suicide. If a person honestly believes that death is the best option for them then they shouldn't be hated for it. The person that committed the "crime" is dead. Don't burden the survivors with having to deal with a fine or something.
