TTBM #4? 5? I don't even-

TTBM: I have the worst luck with updates...the upgrade to Xubuntu 12.10 went wonky (only happens with my laptop, not my desktop...maybe it's just me...) and I'd been having connection/program problems since...so I just made sure all my files were backed up and re-installed from scratch. Works now, but I spent quite a bit of time this morning re-installing programs and re-setting settings. []

I'm actually using xubuntu as well, glad to see another *nix user. I haven't updated recently, but I probably should. How exactly did it go wonky, and what laptop do you have?


Anyway, I've actually got a couple of T's that BM today.

TTBM: When my dog eats my earbuds. Now I'm stuck using my moms headphones. They're actually pretty nice, but headphones don't like to stay in place on my head.

TTBM: Pressing X while moving the left stick. I don't want to throw the guard, that's completely useless in most situation. What I want is to snap his neck and put him in a locker, but instead I end up throwing him on the ground, basically saying "Hey man, it's me, Solid Snake. How about you get off the ground and radio your buddies so we can have a 'Shoot Snake' party? Wouldn't that be fun?"

Yeah and the kicker is that this upgrade wasn't even a big one...I had already upgraded to Xfce 4.10, so it was mostly cosmetic...oh well.

I'm still not exactly sure what the problem was. For one thing, there's a known issue for upgraders with network settings (check the release notes for details), which hopefully will be fixed for future upgraders. For another thing, somehow either a bunch of programs didn't get updated correctly or some got erased erroneously, so I had a lot of stuff missing...it just became easier to take the nuclear option. []

TTBM: So TV Tropes has a page dedicated to how to handle suicides for whatever reason. This in of itself does not bug me, but there's one particular part of it that I call bullshit on.
Specifically, there's a section that states that calling the police is not a very good solution when it comes to dealing with someone who is suicidal, and should only be done when no other option is viable. I can agree with this to a point, as there are specific specialists to call, so calling the police would do less to help the situation than to harm it.
However, one specific quote sticks out as utter nonsense.

"While it must be said there are lots of police officers who are relatively decent people who have joined the force out of a genuine desire to fight for the public good, many if not most are vicious authoritarians who only desire an outlet for their violent instincts. Getting the police involved always brings with it the risk that somebody will be brutalized, especially if minorities of any kind are involved."

Ahh, thank you TV Tropes for telling me with complete seriousness that most cops are automatically aggressive assholes and implying that they want to beat up minorities.

...In Texas, at least, the description is fairly accurate. But there should be something about drug addiction in there.
Of course I think I'm incredibly biased, being born white trash and instilled with an immense distrust for authority. But a little less than half of my town's police force are racist assholes who like to hassle minorities and homeless people. There are lots of good cops, but also lots of bad. Not that we shouldn't have a police force or that police are bad people. The racists would be racists badge or no. The job does attract a lot of jerkwads who are in it for the fun of it, though.

I think I'm much in line with Ziggy's ideas. Namely, that while I'm sure there are some bad police officers out there I'm sure there are also many good ones trying to do the best job that they can.
Still, when we have incidents of blind men being tasered without any real punishment it doesn't fill me with confidence.

See, the problem with there being bad cops and good cops is that it's very difficult for anyone - even another cop - to override a cop post-arrest/whatever.

TTBM: Clearly, the best way to spend Halloween night is in the kitchen of a chinese restaurant, cleaning dishes up until closing time. It's 1 AM, and I just got back from work.

Holidays suck in Hawaii. First of all, they're all warm. Always. Even Christmas.

Second, they're barely celebrated. You get half-assed decorations that are set up (I think there's some stickers of bats at Target) and most places don't even decorate.


I don't know... It's just kind of terrible when Christmas doesn't feel like Christmas, or Halloween is spent at home, in the warm weather, with no decorations in sight. Hell, some guy came up to pick some tools up for our landlord, he said "Hi!." No "Happy Halloween!" or "Happy Nightmare Night" or "BOO!"

Just... "Hi!" Like it's just another day.

Same thing here; Easter and Christmas are the only holidays really celebrated and then the only things that are hung around are some tinsel harps or eggs on the street lamps and 1/10 houses with Christmas lights. I didn't go onto the main streets on Halloween but I assume that there was nothing special being done. A lot of people I talked to complained about how it's an American thing, though, and how they wish it was more of an Australian thing. Avg. temp was something like 25C, I think; it's going to be a hot Spring.

I think it's great; I don't need a day -a reason- to dress up in a costume or give someone presents or candy or make pretty things or to remember someone or to be grateful for what I've got. Birthdays are just as bad; GJ, you survived yet another year, along with 10,000,000 other people; welcome to the club.
