Why the accent in Seán? Just curious...don't know a whole lot about Irish phonology/orthography ...[]

Putting a fada on a letter makes it long.
á makes an awh sound instead of an ah sound. Thus, Seán rhymes with fawn.

ú is oo. Iúil (July) sounds like ool.

é rhymes with hey. Sé (he/it/six, depending on context) is pronounced like shay.

í is like ee. Sí (she) is pronounced exactly like the word "she".

ó is actually like oh instead of like the o in long. Hón (butt) rhymes with loan.

It's only for vowels, there aren't any modifiers for consonants in Irish.

EDIT: Also, zebra, you aren't too far wrong, Tuomey is an Irish surname.
Very common in Cork, usually spelled Toomey or Twomey, but those guys suck.
In Irish it's Ó'Tuama - Grandson of the Tomb(?)

I think that would be pronounced like how most people pronounce "Caesar."
But Caesar itself is apparently supposed to be pronounced like "Kaisar," If Fallout: New Vegas is any indication.

I don't think that's an Irish thing.

I've seen the Æ to be very common in nordic languages. some further searching on wikipedia sais it's derived from the anzuz rune

In Dutch it's also an archaic spelling of what is now 'aa', and I can't think of a word to illustrate the sound correctly. The a sound in 'Ska' (the type of music) might do, I guess.

I figured out a thing or two about the Welsh language.

I know if you have two D's (dd) it makes a "Th" sound.

So, Gruffudd

Would be, Gruffuth.

@ Toumey: I didnt know that people didnt know how to pronounce "Sean". I also did'nt know the exact rules, but I can usually pronounce words right just by reading them. Its probably because I've read..... ALOT of books.

Danish and Dutch confuse me. At first I thought people from Denmark were called Dutch, but now I am under the impression that it refers to those from the Low Countries, like the Netherlands and Belgium.
In Texas when people want their child to be called Sean they spell it Shawn, like my sister's boyfriend's name. As far as I am concerned both are correct. I feel for people with names from other countries because they don't teach us about other countries in our schools. People like Hajar, Oshadi, Aldercy and Army(I cannot pronounce his real name) don't really stand a chance.

YOu are correct about the Dutch.

The only reason I know about all of that is video games.

Viedo games have tought me way more that school (Indirectly, anyway.)

video games taught me that zombies are flammable, and that is an important lesson that everyone should learn

Actually, Dutch is the name of the language we speak in the Netherlands and Flanders (the non-French bit of Belgium). Dutch in the sense of a people is only used for people from the Netherlands, people from Belgium are just 'Belgians'. (And to add to the confusion, Dutch actually comes from the word Deutsch, which means German, in German.)
