Look at Lyra and Bon-Bon. Seen together a few times and now, well, within the fandom they're ALWAYS at least friends. Often they are/were in a relationship. And especially Lyra. Sit in a funny way, now she's the crazy hands/human obsessed pony.
The point I'm making is that the fandom can take the smallest thing, evolve it, create personalities, create massive stories, background information and so on.
Trixie being a bitchy magic user who desired power (Or, y'know. Respect though power. Whatever. Same thing in the end, really) gives the fans massive leeway to sculpt a character. I think that's what got her her massive popularity. She can and was portrayed in so many ways and, for the most part, they were believable. Or, as much as you can with pastel coloured ponies.
