That's what I thought when I saw the trailers/reviews too. Unexplained monsters showing up, story begins after years of war and destruction, one of the characters is the only one who can pilot a specific mech,... The mechs even sort of look like EVAs.

I respectfully disagree with you on these points...
>There isn't some Hero's Journey
I would consider Raleigh reeling over the death of his brother and fighting with the memory throughout the film to be some form of journey. Admittedly it's not your stereotypical formula but wasn't there some hero journeying from all the main characters?
no anti hero angst, no personal dilemmas
I might have been reaching with the "Heros Journey" bit but even you have to admit there was plenty angst from Chuck Hansen (the Australian jerk with a heart of gold and daddy issues) and all the main characters had personal dilemmas.
Gosh yeah everything else though was spot on, super hard excitement boner from the start ahhh
Hey hey favorite moment? Mine was when Gypsy Danger was carried into space and in true anime style brandished a sword, a fucking sword, and when Gypsy went to the aid of Striker Eureka and Cherno Alpha after they were overwhelmed during the bomb escort mission
I don't think we saw the same film at allCube of Reason wrote:On top of all this, there is an actual plot to the film and the characters feel genuine and human, adjectives that could never Michael Bay's characters.

- For Holly, spoilers inside but who am I kidding? I know you will click this anyways:
I stand by my statements and allow me to present my argument.
The death of Raleigh's did indeed haunt him but it still didn't serve the role of the hero's journey. Raleigh admits that he still thinks about and yet when it comes to him climbing back into the pilot's seat it doesn't hinder him. He does not have to overcome it. It doesn't impede him.
I wouldn't call the conflict between Raleigh and Chuck to be angst. Chuck is indeed a self styled rock star and prima donna but his problem with Raleigh was not that he had so much a personal grudge it was that he though Raleigh was a liability to the mission since he was out of commission for years.
Chuck's issue with Raleigh as well as anyone's conflict (when presented) are very quickly resolved in short order. The conflict the characters face are far more important then personal issues and as such they are discarded by the characters. Haunted by memories of your brother dying? Traumatized during your childhood? Facing death if ever getting back in the pilot's seat? Ain't nobody got time for that, there are giant monsters needing to be punched in the face.
The humans themselves inherently act as archetypes playing out painfully specific roles, vessels for the tropes they represent. The characterizations are cliche, but if you understand this is playing off older Kaiju films, you can appreciate the self-consciousness. There will be several moments however where the acting simply falls flat and making you desire better.

What was your opinion on the Australian characters (Father/Son team Herc and Chuck)? They were my favorite characters and I love their heart-wrenching moment towards the end of the movie (one of the few good moments of acting and dialogue in my opinion). I thought their accents sounded exaggerated and stereotype but I'm obviously not a good judge on the topic.
Information about the Monster Godzilla will face off against in Godzilla 2014 is still unknown, but going by reactions of attendees of the Comic-Con Godzilla 2014 teaser footage [...] smoke rises and we pan upwards to see a faint image of Godzilla's head as he lets out a thunderous roar - the iconic Godzilla roar.
Fans have speculated and at times and even worried that Legendary and director, Gareth Edwards might fall prey to the shortcomings that 1998's Americanized Godzilla attempt had.
But this is definitely NOT the case with Godzilla (2014). Legendary and Gareth Edwards know how to make a real Godzilla movie, and come May 16th, 2014, Godzilla fans and general audiences around the world will have a new respect and adoration for science fiction's most iconic giant Kaiju monster.
It's been common knowledge now for a while that Legendary Pictures is planning something BIG for this year's panel, and it involves everyone's favorite, radioactive Lizard - GODZILLA. But what exactly are they going to show us and what exactly has all the viral marketing meant so far?
Legendary launched an official website, called The Godzilla Encounter, which tracks fictional news stories surrounding sightings of a massive creature under the sea. Sounds like Godzilla doesn't it? Since the viral site's launch, they've been releasing a number of images, which are meant to look like screencaps of news stories on various fictional website news outlets
The new official synopsis confirms that there will be multiple monsters facing Godzilla in the 2014 reboot!
