My guess is that it takes place in a grim, not so distant future.

The bearers of the Elements of Harmony have died/dissappeared, as has Princess Celestia. At the same time, a mysterious new force of darkness swarms Equestria, and decimates nearly all of those who oppose it.
The remaining resistance are led by Princess Luna, out for revenge against the enemies she believes took her sister, Spike and Big Macintosh, for the loss of Twilight and Applejack, Derpy Hooves, because they took her eye, and The Great and Powerful Trixie, who makes for a charismatic speaker.

Now that is over analyzing it.

+1 fanfic idea. I'm working on it now. It'll involve a particular plot device from my old civil war fanfic.
...And I will work on Post Series as well, sorry I haven't gotten anything done on it guys. School made me forget about it and when ever I rembered it, I was doing something else.
My short attention span will be the death of me.

Almost litterally the mane 6 kill themselves and Cilesstia is killed by Luna in front of her nobles and Luna. I will leave you to comtemplate.

I don't like Twilight's hair much. I think it looks really unflattering. Fluttershy has the best hair.

I will say that I'm feeling more confertable with doing brony stuff when my parents are home. Three out of five people in my house know about my bronyness(including me) and don't mind it. Still don't know about my parents, if they they remeber it at all(there have one or two times where thye found out, but as I said, it seams like they forget about it quickly) they don't mention it.
Eeyep, I don't think I have to be worry about what people think of my bronyness in my house(I know what the responce at school would be, so no way is anybody at school going to learn about it).
