@Jonny: I'm technically under a research grant for LIDAR, but it is essentially an internship. LIDAR is basically where a laser is pulsed and the backscattering measured to determine such information as range, chemical composition, directional changes, among many other things. We use it to measure water vapor composition in the atmosphere. Specifically I am working on a low power model that may very well be sent to mars for measurements of the martian atmosphere. It could also be used on next gen GPS satellites but that's just my theory. LIDAR is very similar to RADAR except it uses light wavelength signals as opposed to radio wavelength signals. The higher frequency and hence smaller wavelength means the beam will not simply go around aerosols and such but will hit them and reflect/absorb/scatter/etc the signal.

One of my electrical engineering professors helped me get the grant.
