So today we were playing an arrangement of Jingle Bells that sounds really cool, and I was wondering what 'bells on bobtails' actually refers to. After thinking about it I guess they have tied bells onto horses whose tails have been bobbed. Does this make the people in question French? They are historically the only ones I can think of who always bob the tails of their horses.

I thought it meant tying bells to wildcats.
