So while we were in the car, my parents ended up discussing discrimination, and eventually my dad went on a rant regarding how much it pisses him off to hear white people say there is no more racism. And all the while, he kept referring to just white people in general, rather than specific individuals.
And the hypocrisy of that was pretty funny to me, but he does have a point, in that racism certainly isn't dead, as proven by his statements, and certain current events, most notably the Treyvon Martin case*. So basically, what I wanted to discuss/debate, is the level of discrimination still in modern society, who it's against, and similar topics.
I personally, do not see much racism in my immediate area, but I do see quite a few kids who playfully throw slurs around because they think they're funny, and while that doesn't bother me, I know that if they ever end up doing that around someone who does get offended, they'll be in deep shit. We can't just let slurs lose their original meanings, because that would pretty much mean disregarding the ugly history around them, and while we can't dwell on the past, that doesn't mean we can't look back on it.
*If you haven't heard about it, in Florida there was a 17 ear old black kid named Treyvon Martin who was being followed by a Hispanic self-appointed neighborhood watch captain George Zimmerman. Zimmerman thought Martin looked suspicious, and eventually got into a scuffle with Martin, who at that point, knew that Zimmerman was following him. Zimmerman shot Martin in the scuffle, and when the police got involved, Zimmerman claimed he shot Martin because he felt threatened, and he was let go, but then the media got ahold of the story, and now he's being charged with second-degree murder.
