So, I've been playing a fair bit of DoomRL recently. It is a good game and you should play it if you like Doom and/or Roguelikes. Or even if you've never played a roguelike. It seems to be far less harsh than most roguelikes, so it would make a good introduction to the genre.

Valkyria Chronicles can be pretty annoying sometimes. I spend ages triggering rockslides and getting my troops out the way only for the giant tank bearing down on me to crush a tank six metres to is right for no apparent reason.

What's a good game for someone who is becoming jaded at games?

Depends what type of game you want to play.

I think if you really want to force yourself to relax, enjoy the story and mess around in games then old-school Bioware is always good. Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale- BG because you can pretty much kill everyone and not break the game and IWD because the game is so linear that I don't think you can break it unless you're really trying to. Planescape Torment is broken even if you play it carefully but that has a fantastic story.

Break the mold.

If you want solid game play and minimal visuals, FTL is an excellent space warfare rougelike that's surprisingly deep. Similarly, The Binding of Isaac is another rougelike, but this one is a run-and-gun adventure with a great story that draws on biblical themes in a hilarious way.

If you want a good story, go for The Walking Dead. Make sure it's the point and click adventure by Telltale Games. That game has left me near tears multiple times, and after one part (if anyone else has played it, I think they can guess what choice it is) I had to back away from the game and just go sit and cry for a while. If that's a little too serious, try out Thomas Was Alone. It's a smart and funny platformer about some colored squares. They're characterized extremely well even though the art is about as minimal as you can get.

If you want something that's got beautiful visuals and great music, play Bastion. It's a nice little isometric adventure game, something I haven't seen in a long time. The story and characterization aren't pinnacles of the genre, but damn, the narrator's voice makes you forget any qualms.

If you think there's too many CoD/Battlefield clones and they're stifling the industry as a whole, play Spec Ops: The Line. Just trust me. Similarly but dealing more with violence in all video games, Hotline Miami.

All of these games are $30 or less on Steam (in America, at least) and the majority are under $15, plus all of them except for maybe Spec Ops can be run even on old, decrepit computers,

yes perfect description
I had a copy of Soulstorm and I thought that was a little more difficult but then my friend stole it and then I stopped being his friend

I main Imperial Guard because I play defence; basilisk + heavy weapons with line of sight from the vindicare assassin is pretty much the all-round best long range play in the game
Tau are so annoying because the best units don't regenerate, can't reinforce and you can't repair them which is the biggest weakness honestly otherwise they would cream everyone

Always wanted to get into Dawn of War 2 but Steam ughhgh

I think I have Warhammer: Mark of Chaos which is really good and beautiful but really short

I usually go for the Space Marines, because Grey Knights are cool and wreck shit everywhere. Every other unit is just cannon fodder.

When the games go wrong, you back to the beginning. Well Atari is where you got the job, so is the beginning. Just saying. [ ]

Yeah, you could say that. The really colorful screenshots are always the ones that are picked out, but it isn't always that bright. Plus the story actually lends reason to why everything is so colorful, as it's after a fantastical apocalypse.

As for the gameplay itself, Bastion is fantastic. The mechanics are solid, there's no death that feels unfair. There's the perfect amount of weapon types, not too many and not to few, and enough variation in the different types that it's actually really enjoyable to just experiment with different combinations. I actually ended up with a combo (mortar and spear) that I thought was almost OP, but I've never heard it mentioned anywhere on the internet, so obviously it allows for a lot of different styles. Also there's a really well-made branching upgrade system, so you can adapt. Enemies are similarly varied and enjoyable to fight.

The story is a bit better than I made it seem. The ending in particular is fantastic and the backstory missions are brilliant, but the rest of the game is slightly lacking in comparison.
